OUR MISSION
Our mission is to promote and support the creation of green lab initiatives within Portugal and foster collaborations between them. By bringing together green teams across Portugal and encouraging the sharing of knowledge and resources on sustainable laboratory practices, we expect to drive changes in the Portuguese research community, towards more environmentally aware research practices.
COORDINATION TEAM
Joana Magalhães
Joana Magalhaes is a researcher at Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S), University of Porto. She studies ageing mechanisms and age-related diseases. Joana believes that science needs to respond to societal needs, not only creating knowledge, but also improving education and responding to the climate emergency. She has been active in green lab movements on institutional, national and international level, aiming to promote sustainable changes in research.
Susana Alarico
Susana Alarico is a Microbiologist at the Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), Univ. of Coimbra where she focuses on studying various topics including Nontuberculous mycobacteria biology and adaptation to anthropogenic environments; Mycobacteriosis and new targets for innovative therapies; and Human microbiome signatures of the dysbiotic gut in chronic diseases. For her, conducting research to promote people’s health and well-being only makes sense if researchers are committed to environmental sustainability. She has been actively involved in implementing sustainable practices at her institution, which includes reducing, reusing, and recycling materials generated daily, as well as lowering the energy consumption of laboratory equipment through proper maintenance. She believes that by following good practices, we can make a difference to the planet and our own health.
Ana Rita Ferreira
Ana Rita Ferreira is a science and technology manager at the Institute of Biomedicine (iBiMED), University of Aveiro. During her scientific career, she studied host-pathogen interactions in the field of virology and microbiology.
Ana Rita Ferreira is a member of the iBiMED GreenLab team, which aims to reduce the environmental footprint of the research conduct at iBiMED. With her enthusiast for science, teaching and science communication, she aims to have a positive impact in science, contributing for a more sustainable research.
Maria João Carvalho
Maria João Carvalho is a researcher at the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Aveiro. Her research interests span Microbiology, Genomics, Metagenomics and Bioinformatics analysis for the characterisation of microbes and microbiota associated with disease and integrate multimodal data to study the microbiota interactions with biotic and abiotic factors.
Maria João is a member of the iBiMED GreenLab team, which focuses on three key areas: reduce, reuse, recycle research material; energy reduction and rational use; education, awareness, and community engagement. She is committed to responsible and sustainable biomedical research and to raise awareness among scientific peers and the wider society, with the aim of contributing to a sustainable and resilient future.
To accomplish our mission we are part of the Sustainable European Laboratories (SELs) network.
This network aims to advocate for sustainable science in Europe, by bringing together individuals and teams involved in sustainable research across the continent.
